The value of CBT-I

  • Specific treatment for insomnia: The program addresses time in bed, sleep habits and thoughts that interfere with sleep.
  • A nonmedication option: Patients learn behavioral strategies without adding a prescription. Their prescriber remains responsible for any medication changes.
  • A plan for maintaining sleep: Treatment includes guidance for managing future setbacks and continuing the skills at home.

Why Virginia providers choose our practice

  • Virginia-licensed expertise: Each clinician treating your patient is licensed in Virginia and trained in CBT-I.
  • Help with coverage: We check benefits before the first appointment and explain insurance or self-pay costs.
  • Easy access to intake: A referral needs basic patient details, with no form or portal registration.

Adding CBT-I to a current therapy plan

A patient can continue with their therapist while receiving insomnia treatment here. CBT-I offers focused work on sleep within a defined course of care.

  • The clinician reviews a daily sleep diary to set and adjust the sleep window.
  • Sessions combine behavioral changes with techniques for addressing sleep-related worry.
  • The course ends with a written plan the patient can use if insomnia symptoms recur.

How Virginia practices can refer

Send the patient’s name, date of birth and contact information by fax, email or phone. Relevant history is welcome but not required. Our team will contact the patient to arrange an assessment.

A provider referral is optional; patients can use the booking link on their own.

Patients to consider for CBT-I

Adults may benefit from assessment when they have:

  • Difficulty falling asleep or prolonged waking at least three nights a week for three months or longer.
  • Insomnia that persists despite treatment for depression or anxiety.
  • Sleep difficulties that have not improved with general sleep advice, or a wish to avoid additional sleep medication.

Sleep apnea often occurs with insomnia, and both may need treatment. We provide insomnia care and coordinate any required referral to partners who manage apnea.

What happens during the Virginia program

The first appointment is a 50-minute assessment of sleep history, prior treatment and medication. Patients keep a daily diary for their weekly visits. Most courses run six to eight weeks, during which the clinician adjusts the sleep schedule and helps the patient establish skills for ongoing use.

Most care is delivered over video by clinicians licensed in Virginia. A limited number of clinicians also offer in-person appointments, with availability confirmed at booking. Patients must stay within Virginia for the whole appointment.

Review your insomnia score

Complete the seven questions below about sleep over the past two weeks. The Insomnia Severity Index adds your answers into a score between 0 and 28.

For the first three questions, please rate the current (last 2 weeks) severity of your insomnia problem(s):

1. Difficulty falling asleep
2. Difficulty staying asleep
3. Problem waking up too early
4. How satisfied/dissatisfied are you with your current sleep pattern?
5. How noticeable to others do you think your sleep problem is in terms of impairing the quality of your life?
6. How worried/distressed are you about your current sleep problem?
7. To what extent do you consider your sleep problem to interfere with your daily functioning (e.g., daytime fatigue, mood, ability to function at work or with daily chores, concentration, memory) currently?

Your total is a screening score, not a medical diagnosis. Share it with a licensed clinician so it can be considered together with your symptoms and health history.
